The reason why  Tecumseh fought alongside the British is that Tecumseh thought that a British victory would put an end to the growth of white settlement.

   Who was Tecumseh?

  • Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief and warrior, encouraged opposition to the American government's colonization of Native American territory.
  • Tecumseh was a charismatic speaker who travelled far while establishing a confederacy of Native Americans and encouraging intertribal harmony.
  • Tecumseh was born in what is now Ohio, during a period when the dispersed Shawnee people were gathering in their native Ohio Country. In a series of border battles during his youth, the Shawnees lost territory to the growing American colonists.
  • In 1774, Tecumseh's father was slain in combat with American colonists. After that, Tecumseh received guidance from his elder brother Cheeseekau, a famous military chief who perished in battle with Americans in 1792.
  • Young war chief Tecumseh supported Shawnee Chief Blue Jacket's armed resistance to further American expansion. This conflict culminated in defeat at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 and the loss of the majority of Ohio in the War of the Ohio.
