One of England's most recognizable buildings and a monument with a global reputation is the Tower of London.

What is the historical significance of the Tower of London?

The Tower, the safest stronghold in the realm, guarded royal artifacts and even the royal family during times of war and insurrection. However, monarchs and queens also resided in the Tower's startlingly lavish palace for 500 years. Throughout history, the Tower has represented fear and awe in physical form.

William the Conqueror constructed the White Tower in 1066 as a representation of Norman rule and positioned it strategically on the Thames to serve as a fortification and the city's main gateway.

Thus, One of England's most recognizable buildings and a monument.
