N the great mosque (1. 9. 9) there are red and white stone wedges that make up the series of repeating arches that dominate the interior. these stone wedges are called voussoirs.

A voussoir is a wedge-shaped element, typically stone used to construct an arch or vault.

Each unit of Arch or Vault is a voussoir, but his two units of Keystone and Knight have different functional significance. Keystone is the central stone or masonry unit at the top of the arch. The jumper is the lowest blossom on either side where the curve of the arch begins at the vertical support or abutment of the wall or pier.

Keystones are often decorated or enlarged. 16 Mannerist arches of 1522 often show enlarged and sometimes slightly lowered keystones).
