Defibrillation is used in more serious instances, such as ventricular fibrillation and other shockable rhythms. Electric current pulses are delivered through the patient's chest during transcutaneous pacing to stimulate the heart's contraction.

An unusually slow heart rate is the most typical transcutaneous pacing indication. By definition, bradycardia is a heart rate in an adult patient that is less than 60 beats per minute.
