This is Hemingway's belief that issues should be dealt with stoically and heroically. This can be seen in The Old Man and the Sea in the way the man never gives up and fights the Fish with all that he's got.

The critics to the purchase had called it Seward's Folly. They had been opposed to the buying of the area because they believed that it was a barren place and that nothing good could come out of it.

They referred to it as an icebox and also as a polar garden. A lot of derogatory terms was used to link the purchase because they did not believe it to be a wise idea.
