In telling Nick that he is the son of affluent Midwesterners who are now all deceased, Gatsby makes it seem unlikely that every member of his family has passed away.

What is The Great Gatsby?

A 1925 book titled The Great Gatsby was written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. In the novel, first-person narrator Nick Carraway describes contacts with mystery millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsby's preoccupation with getting back together with his ex-lover, Daisy Buchanan. The story is set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, close to New York City.

Fitzgerald builds Gatsby's stories on the societal changes of the 1920s, using everything from minor details like cars, the development of jazz music, and flapper culture to more overarching themes like Fitzgerald's subtle allusions to the organized crime culture and bootlegging, which gave Gatsby his fortune.
