SCID, or severe combined immunodeficiency, is when the infection fighting cells; the white blood cells (B cells and T cells) get infected, causing the immune system to weaken, giving rise to many infections and diseases.
What are the symptoms of SCID?
In SCID, the immune system does not work properly due to the infected white blood cells, and hence, it is quite difficult for it to fight infection causing bacteria, fungi, virus, etc.
Symptoms of SCID include:
- Failure to thrive
- Chronic diarrhea
- Oral thrush
- Ear infections
- Sinus
- Rashes
- Pneumonia
SCID is a rare disease and pediatric emergency. Immediate treatment is required or the babies may not survive for long. Stem cell transplant is the most common treatment.
