The nurse should help a client with multiple sclerosis and episodes of urinary incontinence by establishing a regular voiding schedule.
How is multiple sclerosis caused?
Multiple sclerosis is a disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath in the axon which results in a loss of communication between the brain and other parts of the body. It causes permanent deterioration of nerves.
It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues and destroys them. Most people with low vitamin-D levels, smoking, and obesity are mostly prone to this disease.
Symptoms of multiple sclerosis include:
- Fatigue
- Loss of balance and dizziness
- Bladder problems
- Bowel trouble
Because of the loss of connections between the brain and other organs like the bladder and the bowel, the muscles in the bladder that store the urine and the muscles that empty the bladder are affected. Hence the person has to urinate frequently and urgently.
Hence, the nurse should establish a regular voiding schedule for the client who is facing urinary incontinence due to multiple sclerosis disease.
