Although 60% of African Americans have taken an HIV test, this group is disproportionately responsible for AIDS death, indicating that testing is not being done early enough to produce the best results. The first home-based HIV fast test (HBHRT) to receive FDA approval is called OraQuick, and it may boost testing rates.
We investigated the potential impact of community health workers (CHWs) and HBRHT on African Americans' access to healthcare and HIV testing in Miami, Florida. 60 African Americans were enrolled between October and November 2013 and randomly assigned to either the experimental condition—where they got CHW assistance to complete HBHRT—or the control condition—where they were given instructions to complete HBHRT independently. Individuals in the intervention were noticeably (p .05) more likely than control participants to finish HBHRT.
