Answer: 2\frac{1}{3}\ hours

Step-by-step explanation:

Given: The total time he drove= 9 hours

The time taken in first segment=2\frac{1}{2}\ hours=\frac{5}{2}\ hours

Since in the second segment of his drive was 1\frac{2}{3} hours longer than the first segment

Then the time he took in second segment=\frac{5}{2}+1\frac{2}{3}=\frac{5}{2}+\frac{5}{3}=\frac{25}{6}\ hours

Now , the time taken by him in the third segment=9-(\frac{5}{2}+\frac{25}{6})

=9-\frac{40}{6}\\\\=\frac{14}{6}\\\\=\frac{7}{3}\\=2\frac{1}{3}\ hours

Hence, He drive 2\frac{1}{3}\ hours after stopping for gas

He drive after stopping for gas for  \frac{7}{3} = 2\frac{1}{3} hours

<h3>Further explanation </h3>

Mark breaks up a 9 hour. Drive into three segments.he drives 2 1/2 hours before stopping for lunch. After driving some more,he stops for gas.if the second segment of his drive was 1 2/3 hours longer than the first segment how long did he drive after stopping for gas?

According to the description above we can draw the segments, where Mark 1st segments is \frac{5}{2} hours

Mark 2nd segments is \frac{5}{2} hours + \frac{5}{3} hours

Mark 3rd segments is ?

9 hours = Mark 1st segments + Mark 2nd segments + Mark 3rd segments

9 hours =  \frac{5}{2} +\frac{5}{2}  +\frac{5}{3} hours + Mark 3rd segments

9 hours =  \frac{15}{6} +\frac{15}{6}  +\frac{10}{6}  + Mark 3rd segments

9 hours =  \frac{40}{6} + Mark 3rd segments

9 hours - \frac{40}{6} =    Mark 3rd segments

\frac{54}{6} - \frac{40}{6} =    Mark 3rd segments

\frac{14}{6} hours=    Mark 3rd segments

\frac{7}{3} hours=    Mark 3rd segments

2\frac{1}{3} hours=    Mark 3rd segments

Answer:

Option (G)

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the length of the race = a miles

Since, Speed = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}

Time taken to cover 'a' miles with the speed = 12 mph,

Time taken 't_1' = \frac{a}{12}

Time taken to cover 'a' miles with the speed = 11 mph,

Time taken 't_2' = \frac{a}{11}

Since the time taken by David to cover 'a' miles was 10 minutes Or \frac{1}{6} hours more than the time he expected.

So, t_2=t_1+\frac{1}{6}

\frac{a}{11}=\frac{a}{12}+\frac{1}{6}

\frac{a}{11}-\frac{a}{12}=\frac{1}{6}

\frac{12a-11a}{132}=\frac{1}{6}

a = 22 mi

Therefore, distance of the race = 22 mi

Option (G) is the correct option.
