The indigenous people adopted the ghost dance religion because according to the traditions the Ghost Dance would reunite the living with the dead.

What is the Ghost Dance?

Western American Indians developed a spiritual movement known as the Ghost Dance. Around 1869, an elder named Wodziwob had a sequence of visions among the Paiute, which is when it all started. These visions foretold the regeneration of the Earth and aid for the Paiute peoples, as promised by their ancestors.

On December 29, 1890, one of the last military operations against Native Americans on the northern Plains took place. On such a South Dakota tribe that month, authorities outlawed the Ghost Dance, a rapidly spreading cult.
