The letter that Hester carries on her chest is one of the main visual symbols that highlight the theme of adultery, sin, and penance.

Two quotes that support this theme are <em>"On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold-thread, appeared the letter A"</em> and<em> "Not a stitch in that embroidered letter but she has felt it in her heart.”</em>

The novel shows people considered unfit to live socially are isolated so that people cannot see their disabilities. This is associated with cultural issues related to morality, as well as with personal thoughts that do not align with the culture.

One interpretation that you can make of the book is that it shows that there are desires that are not fought with religiosity and once these desires are fulfilled it is not possible to keep them secret.
