After the Mexican-American War, the five acts that made up the Compromise of 1850 attempted to resolve differences on slavery in newly gained territory (1846-48). It created a new border between Texas and New Mexico, acknowledged California as a free state, gave Utah and New Mexico the option of becoming slave or free states, and made it easier for slaveowners to reclaim slaves under the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act.
