During the early nineteenth century, the South United states were well known for its huge farmland, noble social structure, and slaves who were used in the farmlands to yield high profits. The South also practiced large-scale farming in crops like tobacco and cotton due to the fact that they had fertile soil and a warm climate.

The Northern United States was widely known for its immigrating communities and industrialization. Their soil and climate were conducive for farmsteads instead of large plantations, due to their smaller lands that were used for farming and building tenements thus they did not need slaves.  Immigration led to a higher labor force in Industries and manufacturing areas. The north also had a variety of natural resources including iron and copper.
