Global energy consumption has increased by almost 50% since 1970. In the last few decades, we have seen a significant increase i
n consumption by transitioning economies. According to International Energy Agency (IEA) via the World Bank, China's per capita use has grown by nearly 250 percent since 2000, India's by more than 50 percent, and Brazil by 38 percent. The map below shows the energy use per capita in 2015 (Figure 1): Map of the world is shown with varying shades of red to show energy use in kilowatt hours per person for the year 2015. The U.S., Canada, and Saudi Arabia used greater than 100,000 kilowatt hours per capita. Australia, Russia, and Kazakhstan used between 50,000 and 75,000 kilowatt hours per capita. China, Europe, Iran, Libya, and South Africa used between 25,000 and 50,000 kilowatt hours per capita. Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina used between 10,000 and 25,000 kilowatt hours per capita.
