Returning to the chorizo night, Tita is summoned to bathe Mama Elena, as she is every week. Unable to concentrate, she overheats the water, ruining the clothes she needs to wash and heat up for Mama Elena. Mama Elena is enraged and sends Tita away.

One of the novel's major themes is responsibility, not only for family traditions but also for one's own actions. Tita must follow tradition and care for both her mother and her nephew.

Tita is called back to the chorizo night to bathe Mama Elena, as she is every week.

She overheats the water because she can't concentrate, ruining the clothes she needs to wash and heat up for Mama Elena. Mama Elena is furious and orders Tita to leave.
