The triplet binding assay and the use of repeating RNA polymers with known sequences  are the two experimental procedures allowed deciphering of the ordered triplet assignments of the genetic code

<h2>Understanding the genetic code</h2>

Genetic Code Genes control the structure of polypeptides; the sequence of four base pairs of DNA can control the sequence of the 20 amino acids found in proteins.  With the discovery of mRNA intermediates, the sequence of four bases present in an mRNA molecule could determine the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide.  The genetic code is also called the nonoverlapping code because each amino acid is added to a polypeptide initiation and termination specified by an RNA codon consisting of three nucleotides.

The genetic code has the following properties or characteristics:

a.  The genetic code consists of the same three nucleotides.  Three mRNA nucleotides specify one amino acid in the polypeptide product;  thus, each codon contains three nucleotides.

 b.  The genetic code is nonoverlapping.  Each nucleotide in the mRNA belongs to only one codon except in rare cases where the genes overlap and the nucleotide sequence is read in two different frames.

c.  The genetic code is "comma free".  There are no commas or other forms of punctuation in the coding region of the mRNA molecule.  During translation, the codons are read in succession.

 d.  The genetic code is degenerate.  All but two of the amino acids are specific for more than one codon.

e.  The genetic code is ordered.  Several codons for certain amino acids and codons for amino acids with similar chemical properties are closely related, usually differing by a single nucleotide.

f.  The genetic code has start and stop codons.  Specific codons are used to start and to end the polypeptide chain.

g.  The genetic code is universal.  With minor exceptions, codons have the same meaning in all living organisms, from viruses to humans.

In the following example, what is the independent variable? Hypothesis: Mice on a restricted low-caloric diet will live longer t
tatiyna

Answer:

A. amount of food available

Explanation:

An experiment consists of two types of variables, independent and dependent. Value of independent variable is decided by the person doing the experiment and is independent of experimental conditions. Value of dependent variable is dependent on the independent variable. It can not be altered by the person doing experiment.

Here, it is given that mice receive variable amount of food each day and their lifespan is recorded. Since the amount of food is decided already it is the independent variable. The lifespan is expected to depend on the amount of food hence it is the dependent variable.
