This is an example of operant conditioning type of learning.  Operant conditioning is a type of learning where action is rewarded or punished.

Operant conditioning is a form of associative learning in which the strength of a behavior is altered by reward or punishment. It is also a method that is employed to facilitate such learning.

Although both operant and classical conditioning entail actions that are influenced by their surroundings, they are fundamentally different. In operant conditioning, environmental cues dictate behavior. It is argued that operational behavior is "voluntary". Operant responses are those that are controlled by the organism. The youngster might have to decide between, say, caressing a puppy or opening the box.
