By the 17th century, a large number of Osage people had moved to western Missouri, along the Osage River. Records from 1690 show that they adopted the horse.

Who Was He, Wahkondah?

The sun rising denoted the start of a fresh day and a new era in life. As it moved toward the west, the setting sun symbolized the end of the day and death as it crossed over to the other side. This path, which all life must take, served as a constant reminder of the Osage people's weakness in the eyes of their Creator, Wahkondah.

What was the original non-European name of the Osage?

The Osage called themselves Ni-U-Kon-Ska, or "Children of the Middle Waters," despite the fact that the majority of white people referred to them as "Wah Sha She." They shared a dialect of Central-Sioux known as Dhegihan with the similar, nearby tribes of the Kansa, Omaha, Ponca, and Quapaw (pronounced "Ta-gee-han").

What did "counting coup" mean?

In the Great Plains intertribal wars, hitting an enemy or counting coup was the highest honor a warrior could achieve. Native Americans were accustomed with complex systems of graduated battle medals, with a coup de combat often being the highest honor.

What transpired to the Missouria tribe?

There were inhabitants there until 1726. In an attack on the Missouria in 1730, the Sauk/Fox tribe virtually completely destroyed it and killed hundreds of people. Most of the survivors rejoined with the Otoe, however others joined the Osage and Kansa. A smallpox epidemic in 1829 left fewer than 100 Missouria alive; all of them amalgamated with the Otoe.

What steps did the tribe of Missouria take?

The Missouri Indians enjoyed hunting large wildlife. Primarily meat eaters, the Missouri tribe spent the spring and summer pursuing the buffalo herds. The Missouris visited their hometowns in the autumn to pick corn, beans, and squash.
