The fourth Thursday in November is designated as the US national holiday of Thanksgiving. It is a festival of the harvest. Since 1789, it has been acknowledged intermittently. During Abraham Lincoln's presidency in 1863, it was made a federal holiday.

Following their first harvest in the New World, the Mayflower ship's pilgrims had their first thanksgiving celebration, which lasted three days and was attended by 90 native Americans and 53 pilgrims.

George Washington made the first official declaration of Thanksgiving on October 3, 1789. It was the first time a holiday that is now widely observed in American homes was celebrated on a national scale.
