The risk of diabetes may be increased by exposure to heavy metals, however, prospective studies are rare.

By examining emissions information for 10 heavy metals from the National Pollutant Inventory combined with data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. 2,584 women (7.6%) who underwent a 20-year follow-up reported developing diabetes. According to Cox proportional hazards regression models, exposure to total air emissions, total water emissions, individual metal air emissions, and six individual water emissions were associated with a greater risk of developing diabetes in women aged 45 to 50 at baseline. Nine out of 11 air emissions and five water emissions were still substantial after accounting for the false discovery rate. For land-based emissions or for younger or older cohorts, associations were not seen. Mining, energy production, and other industrial processes using metals were the main sources of emissions.
