The story of Singin' in the Rain begins with a musical premiere in 1927, starring Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont. Even though they aren't, Lina thinks she and Don are a couple.

(the director) believes she is a major star. Lina plays hardball when R.F. confronts her. She threatens to sue R.F. if he does not remove Kathy Selden’s film credit.
Also, she wants Kathy to dub her voice forever, effectively ruining Kathy's showbiz career. She also wants Kathy to dub her voice permanently, ending Kathy's showbiz career.
