Mercedez went through prejudices and difficulties for being a foreigner and these experiences made her oppressive against other foreigners, reproducing the prejudices she went through.

Who is Mercedez Cruz?

 • She is a woman of Mexican origin.
 • She is the owner of a Mexican restaurant.
 • She is someone who usually hires Mexican foreigners for the restaurant.

Mercedez Cruz has had xenophobic and prejudiced experiences and knows how difficult the life of a foreigner, especially illegal foreigners, is. These oppressive experiences hardened Mercedez's heart and made her harbor a certain hatred for her culture and people, going so far as to reproduce these prejudices with her employees.

In this way, the character confirms W. E. B. Du Bois' statement that self-esteem and the perception of one's own culture can be compromised in people who belong to marginalized cultures.
