The term "redlining" comes from actual red lines on maps that designated predominantly Black neighborhoods as "hazardous." Beginning in the 1930s, the government-sponsored Home Owners' Loan Corporation and the Federal Home Loan Bank Board used these maps to deny Black Americans lending and investment services.
