Blacks living in the south were generally very poor and deep in poverty. It was because of the jobs they lost when they were freed from slavery. In the South, many slaves went back to the farms and instead of working for no pay, they received food and shelter for working. It was in this period, that the term sharecropping and tenant-farming were created. They decided to go back to work in the farms since the jobs in the cities were being taken by all the other blacks and the jobs in the city required higher instruction. Eventually, a bill was created that allowed farmers to sell their land for profit and it cut off the blacks from their jobs on the farms.
