Birds cannot breed where air is thinner because they cannot take in enough oxygen, so fewer species are found at high elevations

. Polar and temperate regions are relatively species-poor because glaciation events repeatedly forced organisms toward tropical latitudes. Because penguins cannot fly, they are forced to remain in the Arctic, and there are few species of birds that can survive such harsh winters. Birds prefer to live near oceans, and proximity to the ocean has a great effect on bird diversity. Because polar bears prey on birds, there are few bird species that can live in the Arctic.

In his efforts to Europeanize Russia, Peter the Great reorganized the government so that the Duma and consultative bodies____.
iris [78.8K]

Answer:

The correct answer is (D)

Explanation:

Peter the Great was the Tsar of Russia between 1682 and 1725. He sought to transform Russia into a great European power, and sucessfully expanded the territory of the Russian Empire through a series of wars against its neighbors.

Worried for what he deemed to be the backwardness of his country, he also launched a modernization program, aiming to Europeanize Russia. He adopted European clothing styles, customs, and manners, and reformed the country's administrative systems such as the Duma and other consultative bodies following European models. He founded the city of St. Petersburg on the shores of the Baltic Sea, and modelled it after other Europeans capitals, with the city becoming Russia's window into Europe. As part of his modernizing drives, he adopted mercantilist policies to stimulate growth of the economy, in the same vein other Europeans power had done during that time. Peter the Great hoped to improve agriculture by adopting modern practices and to develop a domestic industry. However, due to Russia's economic backwardness and huge size, the mercantilist policies weren't as successful as expected and Russia remained a primarily feudal agricultural state.

While he felt short of his goal of fully Europeanizing Russia, Peter the Great's policies had a huge impact on Russia, transforming it into a major European power.

gregori [183]

Answer: Getting to know the new territory, finding land routes, finding new species, completing cartography, settling areas.

Explanation:

 • Getting to know the territory is a significant factor in this exploratory expedition, as the authorities needed to examine the new lands they were claiming. The president himself sent the researchers on their way.
 • Another reason for sending the expedition is finding a land route to the Pacific, which was one of the main goals of this expedition.
 • Along the way, Lewis and Clark became acquainted with certain new plant species characteristic of the areas they explored.
 • This expedition is also essential for completing US cartography and charting new territories.
 • The expedition encouraged the population and the government to help settle the newly discovered territory.
