Mila spends a winter day recording the temperature once every three hours for science class. At 9 am, the temperature was -1.6°F

. Between 9am and noon, the temperature rose 6.6°F. Between noon and 3pm, the temperature increased by 2.8°F. Between 3pm and 6pm, the temperature went down 10.5°F. What was the temperature at 6pm?

We can conclude the following information:

Every 3 hours the temperature changes.

<em>At 9 AM, the temperature </em><em><u>was -1.6°F</u></em><em>:</em>

9 AM = -1.6°F =>

<em>Between 9 AM and noon, the temperature </em><em><u>rose 6.6°F</u></em><em>:</em>

12 PM = -1.6 + 6.6 = 5°F =>

<em>Between noon and 3 PM, the temperature </em><em><u>increased by 2.8°F</u></em><em>:</em>

3 PM = 5 + 2.8 = 7.8°F =>

<em>Between 3 PM and 6 PM, the temperature </em><em><u>went down 10.5°F</u></em><em>:</em>

6 PM = 7.8 - 10.5 = -2.7°F

<em>What was the </em><em><u>temperature at 6 PM</u></em><em>? </em>

-2.7°F

Write an equation for the problem and then solve.

Answer:

  • first rectangle: 18 by 9
  • second rectangle 21 by 6
  • x = 9

Step-by-step explanation:

The perimeter in each case is double the sum of the side dimensions. Since the perimeters are equal, the sum of side dimensions will be equal:

  2x +x = (x +12) +(x -3)

  3x = 2x +9 . . . . . . . . collect terms

  x = 9 . . . . . . . . . . . . . subtract 2x

Given this value of x, the dimensions of the first rectangle are ...

  {2x, x} = {2·9, 9} = {18, 9}

And the dimensions of the second rectangle are ...

  {x+12, x-3} = {9+12, 9-3} = {21, 6}

Answer and Step-by-step explanation:

1) If you graph the lines, you will get the lines in the first attachment. You will see that the intersection point is (3, 5), which is the solution to that system.

2) First, let's convert both of these into slope-intercept form so that they're easier to graph.

x - 3y = 2

x = 3y + 2

3y = x - 2

y = \frac{1}{3}x-\frac{2}{3}

AND

-3x + 9y = -6

9y = 3x - 6

y = \frac{3}{9} x-\frac{6}{9} =\frac{1}{3} x-\frac{2}{3}

We see that these two lines are exactly the same, which means that no matter what coordinate works for one, it will work for the other. In other words, there are infinitely many solutions.

And, if you graph these lines, you will get the graph in the second attachment, where they are the same line.

Hope this helps!

Maslowich

Answer:

B) 4

Step-by-step explanation:

1. <em>It is either 3 or 4</em>, since those are only two angles comparing the lighthouse and the boat.

2. The angle of depression is noted below the horizontal and above the actual line, and out of 3 and 4, <em>4 is the only angle that is below its corresponding horizontal</em>.

So, the angle of depression from the lighthouse to the boat is 4.
