The Igbo culture is important to its survival becuse the relationship between the women in the Igbo community is one of comfort and support. In a patriarchal world where men are violent and expect their women to be submissive, the women band together in solidarity. Okonkwo's wives do not fight among themselves, Ekwefi is happy to have a daughter, regardless of Okonkwo's disappointment. The priestess is respected and commands awe.... even from the men. Where Okonkwo depends on physical strength and intimidation, the women work endlessly for peace in the community. They are an integral part of the Igbo's survival.
