The story "Two Kinds" appears in the book The Joy Luck Club by American author Amy Tan. The story follows Jing-mei Woo and her mother, who move from China to America. The mother is convinced that Jing-mei is a prodigy child, and pushes her to do tests and learn the piano. Jing-mei, however, has other plans for her life. She wants to be a "Chinese Shirley Temple," and dreams of a great life. She is greedy and hard to please. Towards the end of the story, however, she learns the value of contentment.
Two ways that Langston Hughes's "I, Too" is similar to Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing" are that both poems involve singing and a sense of pride in America.
