According to the Treaty of Tordesillas, which was signed in 1494 in the city of the same name in Spain, Portugal would have access and colonization rights to the eastern coast of Brazil and Africa. Spain would obtain the vast majority of the Americas. Over time, Brazil became a large and influential part of the Kingdom of Portugal and during this time and after independence expanded to become the largest country in South America in terms of both land and population.
