Its territory extends from the African Nile in the west, through Cyprus, through the Mesopotamian lowlands and further along the Euphrates and Tigris rivers to the southeast to the Persian Gulf, to the foot of the Iranian highlands.

The area was suitable for agriculture as it was characterized by limited but regular rainfall. The Fertile Crescent is, or was, in reality not a particularly fertile region.
