To a historical point of view, women had to adapt to the custumes and manners of that specific time to be accepted by society and even to survive. From a feminist point of view this was a serious problem because these customs and manners were extremely sexist and authoritarian, put women in terrible conditions that should not be experienced by any human being, and besides, it did not guarantee safety and respect for women.
