Thomas Hobbes was an English Philosopher, who is known for his book called "Leviathan" in 1651. In this publishing, he exposed his "social contract" theory, which is based on the presumption that the legitimacy of the authority of the state surpasses the one of any individual within a state.

Therefore, elections are an example of social theory, as it is up to the public to decide which people will serve them as authorities for a defined period of time. Another example is the introduction of checks and balances in the constitutional convention as a tool for maintaining equilibrium among the powers of government.
