Diana is a piano teacher who charges $45 per hour plus an additional flat fee of $20 for travel. The equation that represents th

is situation is y = 45x + 20, where x represents the number of lesson hours, and y represents the total cost. Another piano teacher, Paula, creates a graph to compare the total amount Diana charges with the total amount she charges for lessons. Paula observes that the graph of her function looks the same as the graph of Diana's function except that it is shifted 2 units below it. Select the function that represents the total amount Paula charges. A. f(x) = 43x + 20 B. f(x) = 45x + 18 C. f(x) = 43x + 18 D. f(x) = 45x + 22

To shift vertically the graph of the function f(x), you have to add a constant to its expression:

f(x) \to f(x)+k

If k is positive, you shift the function k units above, if k in negative, you shift the function k units below.

So, if you want to shift the graph of f(x)=45x+20 two units down, you have to subtract 2 (i.e., add -2):

f(x) = 45x+20 \to 45x+20-2 = 45x+18

Find the inverse function (find f^-1)
Reil [10]

Step-by-step explanation:

f(x) = (x-2)/(3x+3). Let y = f(x).

Then y = (x-2)/(3x+3).

y(3x+3) = x - 2

3xy + 3y = x - 2

3xy - x = -3y - 2

x(3y-1) = -(3y+2)

x = -(3y+2)/(3y-1)

Hence, the inverse of f(x) is -(3x+2)/(3x-1).

against the wind a small plane flew 280 miles in 1 hour and 10 minutes. the return trip took only 50 minutes. What was the speed
Amanda [17]
1)  1hour 10minutes = \frac{7}{6} hours,
              50 minutes = \frac{5}{6}  hours

2) speed of plane against the wind = \frac{280miles}{ \frac{7}{6} } = \frac{280*6}{7}=240miles /hours

3) speed of plane on the the wind =\frac{280miles}{ \frac{5}{6} } = \frac{280miles*6}{5}=336miles/hours

4) (336-240):2=48miles/hours  - speed of wind
5)336-48=288miles/hours - plane's speed <span>in still air

Answer: speed of wind is 48 miles/hours, speed of  </span>plane in still air is 288 miles/hours
