The figures in this cartoon are Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty. Both symbolic figures of the United States and what American Culture stands for.

This cartoon tries to depict the position of the United States in regards to the current geopolitical landscape. It tries to express the idea that many social and political phenomenons are making the world a hectic place. Despite this, the United States will continue to live by its core values and represent a land where all can live free and have the security that their rights will be protected.

Figures are Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty

Uncle Sam represents the county or the government whereas Lady Liberty represents the ideals of freedom and refugee that the US included in their founding documents.

This cartoon is regarding McCarthyism suggesting everyone is being labeled a threat to the country. The last line of the cartoon says "sometimes I even think thee" suggesting even the highest rules of the country may be violating the safety of the country.

iren [92.7K]

Both the Meiji Restoration in Japan and the efforts of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in the German Empire were focused on unifying, strengthening and modernizing the government and economy of their nations.

Bismarck led the way in uniting the many German states and principalities into a single, powerful German Empire, created in 1871.  In Japan, prior to the Meiji Restoration, shogun rule (rule by military leaders) held control over part of the country, but feudal warlords maintained much power in their own lands.  In 1868, shogun rule was ended and the emperor was restored to full power over the country.

A push for rapid industrialization characterized both Germany and Japan in the latter portion of the 19th century.

A key difference, however, was that the various German states had already begun industrializing before Bismarck came to power in Prussia and led the creation of the united German Empire. Bismarck's government strongly backed and increased industrialization efforts.   In Japan, before he period known as the Meiji Restoration, Japan was not focusing on industrialization.  Feudal arrangements persisted.  But  the new emperor took the name "Meiji," meaning "enlightened rule."  And under the reign of Emperor Meiji, which lasted till 1912, Japan aggressively pursued  modernizing and westernizing it economy and way of life.

Snezhnost [94]

Correct answer:  D. To help former slaves make the change to freedom

Details:

The Freedmen's Bureau was established by Congress in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War.  The aim of the Bureau was to provide assistance to former black slaves (as well as poor whites) in the South during the Reconstruction period.  The Freedmen’s Bureau provided food and housing, established schools, and made medical and legal assistance available.  There was an intention of settling former slaves on land confiscated or abandoned during the war, but that didn't materialize. Radical Republicans took over dominance in Congress and they determined that confiscated lands in the South should be returned to their original owners.
