The motive behind why Supreme Court judges are given lifetime appointments according to the constitution of United States is that they protect justices from political pressures.

Further Explanation:

Supreme Court judges of United States are given indefinite terms given to them lifetime appointment and many people think that this power does more harm to legal system then good. But, the founders of the constitution of United States of America gave judges of Supreme Court this power to prevent them from being influenced by any other branch of the government. Appointment of judges of Supreme Court is considered as one of the most important responsibility of President of United States because the judge he will appoint was reign for his lifetime. This kind of law is not followed in any other country. Other countries have set an age limit with regards to retirement of their Judges. Giving power to be judge of Supreme Court of United states, Gives power to them to take any decision in favour of people without any political pressure. But a lot has changed from 18th century as when this constitution was made and this clause of appointment of judges of Supreme Court in United States, The life Expectancy during that period was 50 years for white men as compared to current period where life expectancy of white men is 79 years which is growth of nearly three decades.

I believe the answer is: They protect justices from political pressure.

If supreme court is replaced every time the president is changed, the chosen supreme court would most likely feel pressured to conform to the will of the political parties that help his/her election. To prevent this, the supreme court is appointed for lifetime.
