Although both women are from the Bengali culture, the excerpt shows how the two families differ in their socioeconomic status and how they spend money. The narrator's mother is more cautious with her purchases. This is evident when she protests the purchase of a bra for her daughter: "Oh, no, she's far too young," my mother said. . . . Despite my mother's protests, your mother bought me my first three bras, insisting that they were a gift.
The other woman is portrayed as more outgoing, trendy, and cosmopolitan. She spends money easily and does not need to look at the price tags: “On her way to the bras she bought black leather gloves and a pair of boots that zipped to the knee, never looking at the price before taking something off the shelf.”
The main difference illustrated here is socioeconomic status. The poorer girl is initially not given money, and is then surprised by the fancier stores the go to. Another key point of differentiation between the two is the last sentence where the wealthy mom bought “an assortment of expensive creams”. This indicates that the girl is caught off guard by the luxury of the items purchased during the trip
