Romanesque architecture developed during the Middle Ages and lasted more than 200 years. This style features buildings that are solid and massive. Windows were small with less stained glass. These smaller windows made the building darker. Large pillars inside the building were used for support. This style was heavier and similar in appearance than Gothic architecture.

Gothic architecture evolved from the Romanesque style. It came about the 12th century. One of the most important differences between these two styles is that the Gothic style allowed for buildings to be taller. This allowed for stained glass windows to be larger, which then allowed more natural light into the structure. Gothic architecture utilizes flying buttresses and minimal structural support. One of the easiest ways to tell the difference between Gothic and Romanesque is be looking at their arches. Pointed arches were found in Gothic architecture while Romanesque featured rounded arches. The image below shows the difference between the two styles.

shorter answer for edg2020:

The Romanesque style of architecture dominated in Western Europe until it was replaced by the Gothic style. Romanesque architecture lasted from about the mid-11th century to the mid-12th century. From then until the 16th century, Gothic architecture was the favored style for the construction of churches and cathedrals. Romanesque architecture is massive, low, and solid-looking. Gothic architecture has three distinct characteristics that set it apart from its Romanesque predecessor. These are the pointed arch, the ribbed vault, and the flying buttress.
