Well, what started the tensions was the sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-Boat in the Celtic Sea, in response to this U.S. President Woodrow Wilson sent letters to the german government demanding they stop attacking innocent merchant ships.

Kaiser Willhelm, the ruler of Germany at the time, issued an apology to the United States out of fear of them joining the war. Willhelm altered Germany's aggressive naval policy but under the pressure of his military leaders soon reverted back to their aggressive stance.

On the 3rd of Febuary 1917 the American liner Housatonic was attacked by German U-boats and sunk. As a result, America formally declared war on Germany April 6, 1917.

What were the similarities and differences among the colonies in North America?
Xelga [282]

Colonial America also had regional differences among culture or historical reason for establishment as a colony. The Southern Colonies were established as economic ventures and were seeking natural resources to provide material wealth to the mother country and themselves. In contrast, the early New England colonists were primarily religious reformers and separatists. They were seeking a new way of life to glorify God and for the greater good of their spiritual life. The Middle colonies welcomed people from various and diverse lifestyles. The social-political structure included all three varieties: villages, cities, and small farms.

1. During World War I, many women joined the military forces. They did so mostly in non-combat roles, such as nurses and switchboard operators. However, about 13,000 women were also admitted into active duty in the U.S. Navy. The government compensated all women who joined the war effort. The women in the Navy received the same benefits and responsibilities as men, including identical pay and veteran status after the war.

2. All Americans were interested in the war effort, and this meant that most of them valued the active role that women were taking. However, this did not necessarily translated to a more egalitarian approach to their private lives, as women continued to fulfill traditional roles.

3. A lot of women felt empowered because of the role they were playing in the war. They entered the workforce in large numbers, and developed a social, independent life outside of home.

4. The participation of women in the war led to a change in traditional gender roles. Women were able to gain more freedom and appreciation. They were also able to build a life outside their home. This encouraged them to fight for equal rights, particularly when it came to suffrage.
