A newer bolder concept in painting - The painting "Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe" portrayed a scantily dressed woman sitting and having a picnic with two well-dressed men. Through his painting, he tried to break free from traditional concepts of painting where a scantily dressed woman was only used to depict goddesses. Moreover, the concept of the woman sitting with well dressed men seemed to portray her as a prostitute. This was considered too bold and the setting too unrealistic by the public during the time.
