Spanish colonies in the New World were cruel--Las Casas wrote many accounts of the brutality he witnessed in the New World and reported back to the Spanish government. 

Las Casas believed the encomienda system (slave labor system used by the Spanish with Native Americans) was cruel and encouraged the Spanish to end the system.
