Plants exhibit an extra layer composed of cellulose, hemi-cellulose and pectin around the plasma membrane known as the cell wall.

Since this layer serves the function of the wall that is protected from the external environment and providing toughness and rigidity to the plant, therefore, this is known as the "wall of the cell or simply cell wall".

Cell wall aids in the survival of the plants in their habitat as the composition of the wall provide mechanical strength to the plants which enable the plants to straight upright.
