Two weeks after the defeat at Bunker Hill, Washington set camp in Cambridge, Massachussetts and inspected the new army there. The recruits were undisciplined and unskilled, but Washington instituted a harsh training regime which included floggings and incarceration. He also removed incompetent officers from their posts. All of these methods contributed to the creation of a more skilled and more disciplined continental army.
