South Carolina was the first state to secede.

Explanation:

South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union in 1860 and the other states would follow shortly after.

They were also the founding members of the Confederacy founded two months later in Feb 1861.

Thus, in the narrative of the Confederacy they are said to have been the ones that won the race and the nature of their angst was taken as an example by other states to find the cause to secede too.

Their win in the race is thus celebrated.
