This style of painting is identified with almost the opposite of naturalistic painting. To achieve this , painters would distort the human forms and objects. They create images outside of how nature presented them, and often used fanciful artificial shapes and unrealistic proportions to achieve this. They also use an extreme form of the technique called chiaroscuro, this is the use of a dark background to highlight a subject in bright light.
