The Simple Past is used when the following actions occur:
- A completed action that has no connection with the present.
- Repeated actions in the past.
- In stories or when talking about historical events.
Normally verbs in English are divided into two groups : regular and irregular. Regular verbs are not difficult because their simple past is formed by adding ´ed´ to the verb regardless of the person being used (first, second or third), or if the person performing the action is singular or plural.
However, irregular verbs are different. Irregular verbs do not follow any rules to form the past, so they must be learned by memorizing or practicing their use through specific exercises and through the daily practice of english since its use is very common.
Therefore the structure of the simple past is :
(Subject) + (verb in past, or termination 'ed').
