Answer:

Area of Rectangle = length times width

lets say length = 2x-4

width = x+5

Note: you can switch these around, width could be 2x-4 and length could be x+5, it doesnt matter.

With that being said:

length * width = area

(2x-4)(x+5)=area

Vertex form of <br> y=x^2-4x-9
Scrat [10]
Complete the square
first isolate x terms
y=(x^2-4x)-9
complete square inside (take 1/2 of square of b )
-4/2=-2, (-2)^2=4
add 4-4 inside
y=(x^2-4x+4-4)-9
complete the square
y=((x-2)^2-4)-9
y=(x-2)^2-4-9
y=(x-2)^2-13

The average age of staff in the maths department is 40.
pashok25 [27]

Answer:

Cerian is 28 years old

Step-by-step explanation:

The given parameters are;

The average age of the staffs in the mathematics department = 40

The number of staffs in the department = 7

The average age of Jill, Nicky and Wendy = 41

The average age of Andy, Alan and Cathy = 43

From the given parameters, we have;

The average age of the staffs in the mathematics department = (The sum total of the ages of the members of the math department)/(The number of staffs in the department)

Therefore;

40 = (The sum total of the ages of the members of the math department)/ (7)

From which we have;

The sum total of the ages of the members of the math department = 40 × 7 = 280

Which gives;

Jill's age + Nicky's age + Wendy's age + Cathy's age + Cerian's age + Alan's age + Andy's age = 280 years

The average age of Jill, Nicky and Wendy = 41

Given that Jill, Nicky, and Wendy make up 3 of the 7 members of staffs, we have;

The average age of Jill, Nicky and Wendy = (The sum total of the ages of Jill, Nicky, and Wendy)/(The number of staff Jill, Nicky, and Wendt make)

Therefore;

The sum total of the ages of Jill, Nicky, and Wendy = 41 × 3 = 123

Which gives;

Jill's age + Nicky's age + Wendy's age = 123 years

Similarly, the sum total of the ages of Andy, Alan, and Cathy = 43 × 3 = 129

Which gives;

Andy's age + Alan's age + Cathy's age = 129 years

Therefore;

Cerian's age = (Jill's age + Nicky's age + Wendy's age + Cathy's age + Cerian's age + Alan's age + Andy's age) - (Jill's age + Nicky's age + Wendy's age) + (Andy's age + Alan's age + Cathy's age)

∴ Cerian's age = 280 years - 123 years - 129 years = 28 years

Can someone help me with this problem I really don’t know how to work it out and I’m getting frustrated please help..

Answer:

  1 cake and 6 pies

Step-by-step explanation:

Let c represent the number of cakes Alice and George can make. Likewise, let p represent the number of pies.

Then the amount of flour they need (in cups) is ...

  3c + 2p . . . . cups of flour needed

And the amount of sugar needed is ...

  2c + 1.5p . . . cups of sugar needed

__

They want to use all 15 cups of flour they have, and all 11 cups of sugar, so the amounts above need to match the amounts on hand:

  3c + 2p = 15

  2c + 1.5p = 11

We can solve these equations various ways. One of my favorite is to use a graphing calculator. (See attached) It tells us that Alice and George can make 1 cake and 6 pies with the flour and sugar they have.

_____

If you want to solve these equations algebraically, there are several methods for that, too. Here, we can multiply the first one by 2/3 and subtract the result from the second one:

  (2c +1.5p) -(2/3)(3c +2p) = (11) -(2/3)(15)

  2c +3/2p -2c -4/3p = 11 -10 . . . . . eliminate parentheses

  1/6p = 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .collect terms

  p = 6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . multiply by 6

Substituting into the first equation gives ...

  3c +2·6 = 15 . . . substitute 6 for p

  3c = 3 . . . . . . . . subtract 12

  c = 1 . . . . . . . . . . divide by 3

These values tell us Alice and George can make 1 cake and 6 pies with the flour and sugar they have.
