The stalemate in the western front began after Germany failed to quickly defeat France.

Explanation:

The German plan was to quickly overrun France in a few days of attack going through Belgium but that attack was stalled by the french and thus it resulted in a great stalemate that would last for along period of the war and would not be completely breached by the Germans.

This meant that the war that the Germans were to begin with the defeat of the French had turned into something they had not really expected to happen.
