  • Amerigo Vespucci was widely known as an Italian-born merchant and explorer. He partook  in early voyages to the New World on behalf of Spain around the late 15th century. Vespucci's name was widely known in those early years.  In 1507, with the use of his letters as his guide, a German cartographer created a new map, naming the territory now known as South America in Vespucci's honor. This was the first occasion of the name "America" being in print.
  • His voyage of 1501 to 1502 brought about the discovered of lands that were not part of Asia but a "New World.
