The capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Army, under the command Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II<span> on 29th May 1453. </span>This is a modern city of Istanbul<span> and the surrounding area. </span>Istanbul<span> is the place where the ancient city of </span>Byzantium<span> was located, and the place where Constantine decided to build a new capital for Rome.</span>
